Protoplanet Magnetosphere Interactions

چکیده
Aims. In this paper, we study a simple model of an orbiting protoplanet in a central magnetospheric cavity, the entry into such a cavity having been proposed as a mechanism for halting inward orbital migration. Methods. We have calculated the gravitational interaction of the protoplanet with the magnetosphere using a local model and determined the rate of evolution of the orbit. Results. The interaction is found to be determined by the outward flux of MHD waves and thus the possibility of the existence of such waves in the cavity is significant. Conclusions. The estimated orbital evolution rates due to gravitational and other interactions with the magnetosphere are unlikely to be significant during protoplanetary disk lifetimes.

Possible Commensurabilities Among Pairs of Extrasolar Planets
We investigate the possible commensurabilities to be expected when two protoplanets in the Jovian mass range, gravitationally interacting with each other and an external protoplanetary disc, are driven by disc induced orbital migration of the outer protoplanet into a commensurability which is then maintained in subsequent evolution. We find that for a variety of protoplanet masses and typical p...

We study and review disk protoplanet interactions using local shearing box simulations. These suffer the disadvantage of having potential artefacts arising from periodic boundary conditions but the advantage, when compared to global simulations, of being able to capture much of the dynamics close to the protoplanet at high resolution for low computational cost. Cases with and without self susta...
متن کاملThe Migration and Growth of Protoplanets in Protostellar Discs
We investigate the gravitational interaction of a Jovian mass protoplanet with a gaseous disc with aspect ratio and kinematic viscosity expected for the protoplanetary disc from which it formed. Different disc surface density distributions have been investigated. We focus on the tidal interaction with the disc with the consequent gap formation and orbital migration of the protoplanet. Nonlinear...

Introduction: Discoveries of extrasolar planets and their unusual properties have spurred renewed interest in protoplanetary dynamics and the formation of planets. Of particular importance is the study of the mutual interactions between circumstellar disks of gas and/or solid planetesimals and the protoplanets that are created by them, particularly if they form at an early stage in the protopla...
متن کاملAngular Momentum Accretion onto a Gas Giant Planet
We investigate the accretion of angular momentum onto a protoplanet system using three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations. We consider a local region around a protoplanet in a protoplanetary disk with sufficient spatial resolution. We describe the structure of the gas flow onto and around the protoplanet in detail. We find that the gas flows onto the protoplanet system in the vertical direc...
